Steubenville football players drug, kidnap, and gang rape unconscious girl, call themselves “Rape Crew”, tweet about it, take pictures of it, and video tape it. They are essentially sentenced to 1-2 years. The media bends over backwards to portray them sympathetically.

Marissa Alexander fires a warning gunshot to defend herself against abusive husband. No one is hurt. She is sentenced to 20 years

Disgusting

Fuck.

This is rape culture. This is misogyny.
Literally every day we are reminded: We are not safe. We cannot rest.

“I said this a long time ago, and I’m saying it again – not only is rape about a rapist having control, but victim blaming is about controlling the female population: what better way to cajole women into standards of purity, decency, “learning how to behave” and sobriety than dangle the threat of “Well, if you don’t, you’ll surely invite rape upon yourselves?” What better way to get “these hoes” and “these broads” to understand that they don’t “know how to behave” than to help drive home the point that rape happens because women do bad things? Better yet, bad things happen to women who aren’t perfect, or at least striving to be. And who defines that “perfect?” Certainly not women.” — Excerpted from What A Victim-Blaming World Looks Like To A Victim — an absolute must read in its entirety. Thanks to @brokeymcpoverty for bringing this to my attention. Trigger warning for references to sexual assault (both male and female)

what. the. actual. FUCK.

If you say that a woman wearing revealing clothes deserves to be sexually assaulted, you are saying that a woman’s body is inherently deserving of rape. That women are inherently deserving of rape. That women have to make sure their body is hidden in order not to deserve to be raped. That is misogyny in its purest form.

» (TW rape) School Reportedly Made Girl Write Apology To Her Alleged Attacker

Oh, and he raped her again.

h/t to @underwoodchamp on Twitter

I’ve seen this story popping up all over tumblr, and honestly, when I first read it, it made me cry.  Probably because the school this happened at is about 10 minutes from my house, where several of my friends have (and several still do) gone to school. It scares me to think this could have happened to a friend of mine, and this is how the administration would have handled it. It scares me to think that these things happen where I live, right next to me, right around me. But the last line of the article (the Springfield News-Leader one, not the jezebel one) is what bothered me the most.
“ The girl failed and neglected to use reasonable means to protect her self, the response says. Any damages the girl may have sustained, “were as a result of the negligence, carelessness, or conduct of third parties over whom the District Defendants had neither control nor the right to control,” according to the school district response.”

They’re saying that because she didn’t keep him from raping her, it was her fault she was raped.

This is disgusting.
